Sexual Abuse by Therapists, Professionals and Others

Patients who see therapists may be in a position of extreme vulnerability - often necessary in order to receive proper treatment. But being at such an emotional disadvantage can lead unscrupulous psychiatrists, therapists and other mental health professional to use their power to engage in sexual or other exploitive behavior.

Medical journals have termed this therapist abuse or "transference abuse," and surveys have shown that up to 10% of all mental health professionals engage in sexual relations with their patients.

Therapist abuse is a medical phenomenon where the therapist (psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, physician or other person in a therapeutic relationship to the patient) uses the imbalance of power to coerce the victim or patient to engage in sexual relations with the therapist.
